Our sucessful Page Woods campaign was supported by Stephen Metcalfe MP, Basildon Council leader Phil Turner, ward Cllr. Aidan Mc.Gurran, ward Cllr. Stephen Ward, Cllr Kevin Blake (arts & leisure); County Councillor Keith Bobbin, County Councillor Melissa McGeorge, Cllr. Amanda Arnold, the Benbow Club, Pitsea Briscoe Womens institute, Bowers Gifford & District U3A, St. Margaret's School, the Wilderness Foundation, the Woodland Trust, the Gun Public House, Basildon Heritage, Alton Garden Centre, Bowers Gifford & North Benfleet Parish Council, Basildon CVS, Essex Outback Bushcraft Group and hundreds of residents.
With this end in mind, the Residents Association made a community bid to raise the funds to buy Page Wood.
As part of the criteria for our grant application we carried out a public consultation. This took the form of a leaflet drop to nearby homes and a public meeting on the 13th May 2015 at the Benbow Club.
Grants were awarded from Essex County Council CIF, the Veolia Trust, Basildon, Billericay and Wickford Council for Voluntary Services ICCF Small Grants Fund, and along with local fundraising by St.Margaret's C of E (VA) Primary School and local people, we achieved the agreed purchase price.
Conveyancing is currently in progress and we hope that it won't be long before Page Wood is owned by the local community.
On Tuesday 29th November at 10.00 a.m. Cllr. John Aldridge, Chairman of Essex County Council, will be coming along to Page Woods, Page Road, Bowers Gifford SS13 2HP. Weather permitting, he and Cllr. Reeves will be taking a guided history and nature tour of the woods. Cllr. Aldridge will present us with the ECC CIF grant cheque for £20,000 and as it is National Tree Week we are also intending to plant a tree to mark the occasion.
